In response to the increasing demand for professional sign language interpreters following the passage of the Filipino Sign Language Act of 2018, De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) took a pioneering step by establishing the Bachelor in Sign Language Interpretation (BSLI) program—the first of its kind in the Philippines.

This three-year degree program was developed through the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS), grounded in the belief that communication is key to inclusion and empowerment. The program is designed to build linguistic, cultural, and professional competencies among students through comprehensive coursework in linguistics, Filipino Sign Language (FSL) development, interpreting theories, mentoring, and immersive practicum experiences.

BSLI students learn not only the art and ethics of interpretation but also the cultural sensitivity and empathy required to bridge the Deaf and hearing worlds. Each course and practicum experience is crafted to prepare them for real-world interpreting in various settings, education, government, media, healthcare, and beyond.

Graduates of the program emerge as highly skilled interpreters and advocates for accessibility, equipped to uphold the standards of professional interpreting and to promote equality in communication. Through their work, they embody the Lasallian-Benildean mission of service and inclusion, ensuring that the Deaf community’s voices are seen, understood, and valued.

The BSLI program stands as a testament to Benilde’s continuing commitment to Deaf education and empowerment, cultivating professionals who build bridges of understanding, one sign at a time.
