The Supreme Court organized a committee to draft the first-ever Rules for the Implementation of Republic Act No. 11106, also known as the Filipino Sign Language (FSL) Act, specifically focused on FSL interpreting in the judiciary. The meeting was held on May 26, 2024, at the Main Supreme Court Building, Taft Avenue, Manila.
Ms. Bernadette Infanta, a Deaf faculty of SDEAS had the honor of representing De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), together with other respected Deaf leaders, Mariah Agbay, President of the Philippine Federation of the Deaf (PFD), and Carolyn Dagani, FSL Specialist. They were also joined by hearing FSL advocates: Catherine Joy Villareal, the President of the Philippine National Association of Sign Language Interpreters (PNASLI) and also a faculty of SDEAS, and Pinky Earnhart, Executive Director of the Philippine Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (PRID).
Together, they attended the first Technical Working Group (TWG) meeting with several high-ranking officials of the Supreme Court, marking an important step toward strengthening accessibility and inclusivity in the Philippine justice system through the use of Filipino Sign Language.
