Benilde and Hosei University Launch Inclusive Games to Foster Deaf Awareness and Cultural Exchange

On November 2, 2024, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde welcomed students from Hosei University in Japan for an inspiring day of inclusion, learning, and cross-cultural exchange. Hosted by the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS) in collaboration with Barangay 746, the event marked the official launch of a new partnership between Benilde and Hosei University—one grounded in mutual respect, cultural understanding, and shared advocacy for inclusivity.

The day began with a Deaf Awareness Orientation and an introduction to Filipino Sign Language (FSL), where Japanese students gained valuable insights into Deaf culture and communication in the Philippines. Guided by Deaf alumni from Benilde and community partners from Barangay 746, participants learned how language, accessibility, and empathy intersect in creating inclusive spaces for all.

After the learning sessions, everyone came together for a lively round of Inclusive Games—featuring basketball and traditional Filipino games that encouraged teamwork, interaction, and camaraderie among the Deaf community, Japanese visitors, and local youth. The activity not only bridged linguistic and cultural gaps but also celebrated the spirit of collaboration and friendship across communities.

Supported by local barangay officials and facilitated by Benilde’s Center for External Linkages (CEL), the event served as a meaningful platform for service learning and global engagement. It also set the tone for future collaborations between Benilde and Hosei University. As part of the continuing partnership, CEL Director Oscar Sherlo Reyes and Deaf Studies Program Chair Ana Arce will visit Hosei University in Tokyo on December 11 to further discuss joint projects and academic initiatives that promote inclusion and cultural exchange.

Through this initiative, Benilde reaffirms its commitment to inclusive internationalization—empowering students and communities to connect beyond borders, celebrate diversity, and champion a world where everyone belongs.
