The Center for Education Advancement of the Deaf (CEAD) is leading research that strengthens evidence-based practices for Deaf learners’ academic progress and well-being. This initiative supports Benilde’s vision of building inclusive learning environments where Filipino Sign Language (FSL) and Deaf identity are central to education.
From January 3 to 30 and September 9 to October 17, 2024, CEAD conducted a series of assessments on social well-being, mathematics, reading, and abstract reasoning among 29 students from Benilde Deaf School. Responses were carefully checked, encoded, and verified, followed by statistical analysis and presentation of results to key stakeholders. The activity produced 29 individual reports, one consolidated group report, and involved nine sessions that included examiner and student orientations, debriefings, and a presentation to school administrators.
Deaf learners continue to experience barriers that affect language exposure, academic achievement, and self-esteem, limiting their opportunities in higher education, employment, and community participation. To address these challenges, Benilde underscores the importance of a Deaf-centered bilingual education system where FSL, Filipino, and English are used as complementary languages of learning.
By ensuring that Deaf students see their language, identity, and culture reflected in the classroom, CEAD and MLITEDCE aim to promote academic success, holistic growth, and empowerment among Deaf learners.
This initiative forms part of the Model Learning Institute on Deaf-Centered Education (MLITEDCE), made possible through a grant from The Nippon Foundation.
