Benilde-Center for Education Advancement of the Deaf (Benilde-CEAD) held a lecture on the Sign Language Bilingual Approach on June 20, 2024, to provide educators from the Benilde Deaf School and faculty of the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies with insights on how to incorporate linguistic principles into their teaching practices and promote stronger language development in a bilingual education environment.
The guest lecturer, Dr. Miako Villanueva, Director of General Education and Professor of Linguistics at Gallaudet University, has been assisting CEAD with its Filipino Sign Language projects, which are significant in developing the Filipino Sign Language Learning Materials Innovations (FSL-LMI). These FSL-LMIs contributed to Benilde’s vision of establishing the Benilde Deaf School as an exemplary model of bilingual-bicultural education in the country.
CEAD supported this lecture to further its advocacy for Deaf-centered bilingual-bicultural education, emphasizing linguistically informed and inclusive teaching strategies that address the diverse needs of Deaf students.
This activity is an integral part of the Model Learning Institute on Deaf-Centered Education (MLITEDCE) made possible through a grant from The Nippon Foundation of Japan.
