When Music Speaks Beyond Sound: Deaf Benildeans Meet Calum Scott

Music transcended barriers when Calum Scott, the acclaimed English singer-songwriter behind global hits such as “You Are the Reason” and “Dancing on My Own,” met with Deaf students from the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS) of the De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde (Benilde).

Organized by the Benilde Media Relations Unit, the exclusive gathering offered an intimate space for meaningful connection between Scott and the Benilde Deaf Community. The event was held in collaboration with Universal Music Group (UMG), which captured the inspiring moments of the encounter, spotlighting Scott’s deep commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in the arts.

Scott, who made waves in 2021 with his collaboration with Deaf West Theatre on the American Sign Language (ASL) rendition of his song “Biblical,” shared how the experience reshaped his understanding of how music can be felt beyond sound. His interaction with the Benildean Deaf students further strengthened his passion for creating a world where music is accessible to everyone.

Throughout the gathering, Deaf students shared their experiences of how music resonates with them through rhythm, vibration, and emotion—demonstrating that artistry knows no limits. Scott expressed his admiration for their creativity and spirit, emphasizing that inclusivity is not just an act of kindness, but a cornerstone of genuine artistic connection.

The event also opened discussions on potential collaborations between Benilde and UMG, envisioned to promote sustained efforts in accessibility, inclusivity, and Deaf representation in the creative industry.
