[2023-2024] Benilde Showcases Leadership in Accessibility at Microsoft’s Global Accessibility Awareness Day last May 23, 2024

Benilde took center stage at Microsoft’s Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) held on May 23, 2024, at the Microsoft Office in Makati City. Represented by Sherlo Reyes, Benilde shared its pioneering work and initiatives in promoting accessibility and inclusion, reinforcing the College’s reputation as a leader in inclusive education in the Philippines.

The event gathered Microsoft’s top executives, employees, and select representatives from Civil Society Organizations, all united in their advocacy to create a more accessible digital and physical world. In his presentation, Reyes highlighted Benilde’s commitment to accessibility through its flagship institutions—the Center for Inclusive Education (CIE), Benilde Deaf School, and the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS). These programs underscore the College’s dedication to empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring that inclusivity is embedded in education and innovation.

CIE representatives Martin Romero and Jemai Adriano also joined the event, engaging with participants and expanding Benilde’s network of advocates and potential collaborators. Their participation provided valuable opportunities for dialogue and partnership, aligning with Benilde’s mission to continuously advance inclusive practices.

During the discussions, Benilde explored the possibility of collaboration with Microsoft on Microcredentialing programs, aimed at enhancing skills development and accessibility in education. Both parties agreed to reconvene in July to further refine this initiative as Microsoft’s new fiscal year begins.

Additionally, the event opened doors for potential collaboration between Benilde and Unexcluded, a Singapore-based organization that supports start-ups in transitioning from incubation to commercialization. A follow-up meeting with Benilde’s Hub of Innovation for Inclusion (HiFi) was scheduled between May 27 and 31 to explore joint projects.

Benilde’s active participation in GAAD reflects its ongoing commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and partnership—creating a future where accessibility is not just an advocacy, but a standard.
