05 Dec 2023 I Ten neighboring barangays presented their Belen Designs at the Benilde Covered Court for the first Belen Making Festival – a project by the Center for Social Action, the Social Development Coordinator of the School of Environment and Design, and students from the Benilde Industrial Design Program
Dubbed as the “Belen Festival Project,” this initiative was poised to be an annual competition among the various barangays with the involvement of the students and associates of Benilde to further foster the inclusion and innovation mission of the college within the community.
The theme for 2023 is Upcycling: Single-Use Plastics this Christmas! The project encouraged camaraderie and collaboration for a sound, artistic Belen design, including a structure that required at least 50% of the materials to be made of single-used plastics. The other percentage may be natural or indigenous material (ex., bamboo, rattan, abaca twigs, etc).
The kickoff ran from the month of October until its awarding by first week of December, with winning barangay districts’ belen to be displayed in Benilde campuses.
The first meeting entailed a Masterclass from Benilde ID’s Mr. Johann Mangussad on the elements of design, and a brainstorming session in the afternoon with BIND students.
