Benilde FDM student Andrei Valera was named overall winner in the Global Campaign on Sustainable Leather and Weaves, organized by the Fashion Accessory Makers of the Philippines (FAMPh) and the Leather and Hide Council of America (L&HCA), in partnership with the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI). The event was held at PTRI headquarters on September 29, 2023.
The campaign challenged young creators nationwide to design original apparel, accessories, or footwear made of 50% genuine leather and 50% natural or indigenous fabrics, showcasing the beauty, durability, and sustainability of combining leather with local weaves.

Andrei’s winning piece, “Turn Over,” is a modern interpretation of the terno, crafted from cattle hide and locally woven textiles, reflecting a thoughtful balance of tradition, innovation, and sustainability.
His achievement highlights the creativity and skill of Benildeans and underscores the potential of sustainable design practices in the evolving fashion landscape.
