Dr. Raphael Domingo, Head of the Deaf Heritage and Filipino Sign Language Studies Unit at the Center for Education Advancement of the Deaf, served as the distinguished resource speaker for the event. He discussed the significance of Deaf linguistic awareness in the ongoing journey of Filipino Deaf communities, particularly those equipped with competencies in Filipino Sign Language (FSL). The Deaf Linguistics Awareness seminar was held on November 16, 2023 (Thursday) at the Augusto Rosario-Gonzalez (ARG) Theater, Benilde Taft Campus, as part of the 29th Deaf Festival celebration.

The session emphasized the vital role of linguistic awareness in fostering effective communication within the Filipino Deaf community. Dr. Domingo highlighted that as more individuals learn and use Filipino Sign Language, continuous education enhances the ability to connect more meaningfully and inclusively.

The seminar attracted active participation from a diverse audience composed of 35 Benildean students, 20 associates, and 19 non-Benildean students. Their engagement reflected a shared commitment to advancing linguistic understanding and promoting inclusivity through FSL.

The event aimed to deepen participants’ appreciation of Filipino Sign Language and its fundamental linguistic features, reinforcing Benilde’s dedication to Deaf empowerment and accessible communication.
