[2024-2025] CEAD Holds Deaf-Centered Bilingual Education Workshop: Empowering Benilde Deaf Educators

The Center for Education Advancement of the Deaf (CEAD) hosted a bilingual and visual learning program for Deaf educators at the De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde from August 8 to 10. The workshop, Deaf-Centred Bilingual Education: Empowering Deaf Educators Through Bilingual Strategies and Visual Learning, aimed to strengthen the use of Filipino Sign Language (FSL) alongside English in classroom instruction to support flexible communication and cognitive development among Deaf learners.

Participants included Deaf educators from Benilde Deaf School, CEAD, and Benilde Antipolo’s Deaf TCP. A key theme of the workshop was language access—highlighting how strengthened FSL proficiency, teacher collaboration, and differentiated instruction form the foundation of effective learning for Deaf students. The workshop facilitator, Ms. Brenzel Briditte Barbauld, acknowledged ongoing challenges in the Philippines, particularly limited resources and institutional support, and encouraged educators to apply adaptable strategies while continuing to advocate for systemic improvements.

The Deaf-Centered Bilingual Education Program is part of the Model Learning Institute on Deaf-Centered Education (MLITEDCE), a research, innovation, and learning materials development initiative of CEAD, supported by The Nippon Foundation.
