Deaf FSL researcher Nathaniel Macariola of the Benilde Center for Education Advancement of the Deaf (CEAD) won first prize in the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino’s Timpalak sa Tulang Senyas held on April 28, 2025. Organized in celebration of Literature Month, the event brought together Deaf creators, judges, and partner organizations to recognize the growing contribution of FSL to Philippine literature.
Nathaniel’s winning piece, Pagtanaw sa Tradisyonal at Makabagong Larong Pilipino, reflects on the evolution of Filipino childhood games—from the energetic, outdoor play of his youth to the technology-driven experiences of today’s children. Drawing from observation and memory, he used FSL poetry to express emotion, narrative, and cultural insight without spoken words.
He described the win as both surreal and deeply affirming. His journey in FSL poetry began with small performances and steadily grew into a platform for advocacy and creative expression. Nathaniel hopes the art form inspires young Deaf creators to discover their storytelling abilities and gain confidence by learning from skilled Deaf performers.
Beyond this achievement, Nathaniel continues his advocacy through Benilde-CEAD, leading the FSL Grammar Dictionary project and co-developing the FSL & Grammar Handbook. His work—and this milestone—reflects the broader movement to strengthen FSL literature and expand creative opportunities for the Filipino Deaf community.
