Representatives from the De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde (Benilde) visited the Teachers College of Columbia University (CU-TC) in New York City to explore a potential collaboration in the field of Deaf Education.
During the visit, the Benilde team met with CU-TC’s Global Linkages Officer Jazmin Guardado and esteemed faculty members Dr. Maria Hartman and Dr. Elaine Smolen. The discussion centered on tapping into the expertise of Teachers College in the development of a Deaf Education Track under Benilde’s School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS).
Recognized globally for its leadership in education and teacher preparation, Teachers College expressed keen interest in supporting Benilde’s initiative. Dr. Hartman noted that CU-TC is open to collaborating with Benilde in shaping a curriculum and framework that would strengthen Deaf education in the Philippines.
In addition, CU-TC’s Global Linkages Office also explored the possibility of hosting Benilde students through a short-course mobility program, further expanding learning opportunities and exposure to global best practices.
The meeting marks an important step toward advancing inclusive education in the country. The incoming Officer-in-Charge Dean of SDEAS will work closely with Teachers College to lay the groundwork for the partnership, ensuring that the collaboration translates into meaningful programs that empower Deaf learners and educators alike.
Through this initiative, Benilde reaffirms its commitment to providing innovative and inclusive educational pathways by championing accessibility, global engagement, and excellence in Deaf education.
